What is a cooperative?

It is an unfortunate fact of the service industry that many workers feel disrespected, unappreciated, and under valued by their bosses. As long-term service industry vets, CJ, Cayla, and Jacob knew they wanted their project to be different.

The International Co-Operative Alliance defines a cooperative, or co-op, as “an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically controlled enterprise.”

Jawbreaker intends to be a worker-cooperative, meaning many workers are members/owners of the cooperative. The workers would vote democratically on any and all business decisions.

We are proud to currently be working with the Northwest Cooperative Development Center to build the necessary structure to incorporate and operate as a co-op.

For now, we are a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) to ensure licensing and insurance while the necessary by-laws, structure, and processes are finalized.
